What Bin, Aragon?December 28 2020 Students worked with APES teacher Jessica Valera to research and improve waste diversion systems on the campus at Aragon. This analysis led to the creation of plans for outreach to show students how to better sort recycling and organics on campus. SummaryMs. Valera began the analysis of the waste systems on campus at Aragon during the 2018-19 school year. Her APES classes determined that most waste bins, regardless of type, were not sorted well enough for any of the waste to be diverted, and that most waste was contaminated with organic materials and landfilled. This led to multiple efforts on campus. In 2019, Ms. Valera received a 4R’s mini grant from the Office of Sustainability to purchase new bins and improve sorting on campus. Ms. Valera also joined the SMCOE Administrative SMELC program to work with the district to improve waste programs on campus. Working as part of a larger project with the SMUHSD student leadership from all of the high schools, they conducted a campus wide waste assessment and used all of this information to develop plans.
